JASON CARNEY is a poet, writer, educator and anti-hate activist from Dallas, TX. His program will speak about the culture and nature of hate that he once thrived upon, and what it took to change his life. A former skinhead, Jason Carney has overcome his own racism, homophobia, drug addiction, and harrowing brushes with death to find redemption and now works towards the elimination of hate and hate crimes in our world. Woven into Carney’s path to recovery is a powerful family story, depicting the roots of prejudice and dysfunction through several generations.
His poetry gained unlikely fame on the national performance poetry circuit. Jason appeared on three seasons of the HBO television series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry. A four-time National Poetry Slam finalist, Carney has performed and lectured at many colleges and universities as well as high schools and juvenile detention centers from California to Maine.Starve the Vulture: One Man’s Mythology is his memoir.
